     Welcome to the club. They are few and far in between. There’s a pretty cool one that needs some work on Oran Street in Forest Hills. It’s For Sale by Owner and the sign is really small. Other than that, keep an eye on EGR. They pop up from time to time.

     Brooke, my wife and I looked for years and finally found and restored a 1960 gem on 2 acres in the city of grand rapids, minutes from downtown. We are not selling currently but are looking to sell in the near future. Check out this blog that was posted over the holidays. The photos are not great but you get the idea.

   The Buttrick house looks like it could have been done by Norman Carver Jr. The “panelized” construction, wrap around porch and multiple structures are all features of the Japanese architecture that influenced him. An accomplished photographer and architect, Mr. Carver is living and working in Kalamazoo. I’d love to see interior images of this place.

   Oh my goodness you guys! I put in an offer on this house. It is AMAZING inside…needs A LOT of work….my realtor was uncomfortable with how it was going and we backed out (weird selling arrangements-something is really wrong with this house..structure?)….I really love this place….again….needs alot of work and set up really strange. No real living space…and kitchen is a SUPER small gally kitchen right in the middle of your family room. I did really love it though…..needs a special buyer with tons of cash to redo. So far…no luck. Keep looking and letting me know! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

   Here’s one on Breton (it’s actually well off Breton down a private road). I’ve been through it years ago. Quite nice. Not sure of all the upgrades, none were done at the time. It’s pretty private.

    Be very careful if you’re interested in that one because of the in-floor radiant heat. They used copper pipes in concrete in that day and it was a corrosive mixture. There’s an easy test a plumber can do to analyze for leaks and to determine system pressure throughout the house. I strongly recommend it. Yup, I learned that one the hard way. There’s $14,000.00 worth of baseboard heat in that 3900 Valley Drive listing in Midland that came out of my pocket.

      Great site! Has anyone been through first home on the list – 31685 FRANKLIN FAIRWAY ST Farmington Hills, MI 48334? Curious to know impressions. It looks like a great street. I’m wondering if the photos do it justice of if what you see is what you get?

        I went through the Franklin Fairway house back in April. It was pretty much untouched, but well cared for. It needed some work (mostly maintenance catch-up). Overall it was a solid house. My wife and I went to put an offer in two days later and someone else out bid us. I hope whomever gets it respects it and doesn’t ruin it.

    Hey you all looking for houses…..there is a MCM home for sale on Jasmine in Grand Rapids….it looks to be in the woods-but still around people….it is listed at $395,000. There are no pictures of the inside but, it could be cool….just a heads up to you seekers!

    I was surprised to see that you don’t have a house listed in Midland that was designed by Red Warner. I lived in the house with my family from about 1962 until 1967, when we moved to VA.     That turner on Club drive is amazing. I drove by the shadow lane house over the weekend and the lot is super private, but the A-frame build make the 2000 sq. ft interior feel much smaller. Maybe this is why its been on the market for 3 years.

    Yes, the Club Drive house is amazing but the location right next to the Country Club, for some, might be a bit annoying. Regarding Shadow Lane – my understanding is that it’s been sold and is no longer available.

    The house located at 829 Munson Ave. in Traverse City was designed by Robert Bell – an architect who worked with Alden B. Dow before starting his own firm – Graheck, Bell, Kline & Brown in Traverse City. The building was originally designed for Tom Awery, president of Awery Bakeries in Detroit.

      Is this the Charles Breed of Delta College! If so, I still think of your moon roof that you used to describe to us in class- that was many moons ago!:) I miss the Alden B. Dow homes in Michigan. I just thought about you earlier today when I was reading about the organic nature of his work. You taught me about organic and geometric in 2 D. It was my favorite class.

    The 1974 house listed at 4173 Katydid in Kalamazoo (approx. 40th down) was designed by Norman Carver, Jr. one of Kalamazoo’s premier modern architects.

    Does anyone know of a builder and architect that specializes in modern homes? My dream is to build a modern home. The current home I live in my husband and I had custom built. I don’t want just any builder to take on a project that is not familiar with modern design.

    First time on this site and really love the photos. I agree with one post that it is too bad many of them are on outdated links. I am negotiating on a MCM in Mt. Pleasant currently. Has some great features but a few issues. Had previously looked in Muskegon and found a couple places that were interesting. Does anyone know any architects in the GR area that build MCM type homes? Thinking for down the road as I would like to build my retirement home in a few years.

      Hi Denise,

      We agree, the links are a pain, but we haven’t founda good mechanism for keeping them current. For example, in the few years we’ve been doing this, we’ve noticed that firms have changed their URL structure, so the property may still be listed, but the address is different. There’s no way, at this time, to automate that process, and, unfortunately, it’s a lot of work.

      We are in the process of updating this site, and we will be addressing, the best we can, the issue of the links.

      We’re so glad you enjoy the site nonetheless.

      There are several in my neighborhood in downtown Rochester… The streets are Charles and William. One is for sale right now…elderly owner passed away, left it a wreck and someone just redid it. I am not sure how faithful they were but it’s at 260k so it might be worth looking into. Good luck!

        THANK YOU, JENNIFER!!!!! I know EXACTLY which home you’re referring to. I did a drive-by on it, the day it was listed. The seller had done some weird upgrades…..including turning the garage into living space – small house…..that would have had to been undone. I’m a huge car-nut….a nice garage (or space to put one) is mandatory. The lot size was a bit small to. (dogs/kids)

        Very cool looking house….just not quite “right enough” for us. It’s under contract now….I think it sold in a couple days.
