Richard George Snyder was born in Ionia, Michigan, in January 1913. He studied architecture at the University of Michigan and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in 1943. Throughout his studies Snyder worked as a draftsman and field superintendent for Warren Holmes Company in Lansing, Michigan, and as a draftsman for the firm of Giffels & Vallet in Detroit, Michigan. Snyder served in the United States Army from 1941-1946, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. From 1946 until 1950 Snyder worked as a project architect for Warren Holmes Company when he became a partner of that firm.
