Jack Sherman Friedman was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 16, 1926. He attended the University of Chicago and Wayne University (presently Wayne State University) before transferring to the University of Michigan. Friedman graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1952. While at the University of Michigan he was research assistant with the Unistrut Project undertaken by C. Theodore Larsen and Charles W. Attwood within the Architectural Research Laboratory at what was then called the College of Architecture and Design.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Friedman served as a designer and draftsman for Wyeth & Harman, Inc. Architects, in Port Huron, and then as a draftsman for Louis G. Redstone, Architect, in Detroit, before establishing a partnership (Eroh & Friedman, Architects), with Eldon P. Eroh in Pontiac in 1958. In 1966 Friedman established his own firm, Friedman & Associates, in Birmingham.
